Geotextile Tube Application on Containment Breakwater in UAE

Design to use several types of ACETube, which are processed by ACETex 70-I polypropylene woven geotextile fabric and comprised of 8.6-meter and 12.9-meter circumference with length of 10 meters to 50 meters and 13.8-meter width with 20-meter and 50-meter scour apron, to build the main independent body of the breakwater then cover riprap as armor protection.

The new fish port site is located inshore, beside a groin. The client proposed to build a new L-shaped optimization breakwater accommodating the existing groin with an enclosure of total length 700-meter area, forming a fish port. Authorities assessed a cost-effective, fast construction, optimal safe scenario to build this breakwater, because in the UAE most of breakwaters were rubble mound type. But there was a problem to use rubble to construct this breakwater because rubble is such a high cost material. Therefore, a better alternative was considered for this project.

Total quality of ACETube in the design is 286 units and the geotextile apron quality is 33 units, to build the 700-meter breakwater. There are total four layers of ACETube stack to reach a 6.5-meter height and two layers of rock at 0.5 meters and 2 meters. So after the completion, the structure will achieve the design height of 9 meters. Sand material can be contained effectively between ACETube, therefore the construction work can be smoothly conducted.

During the past year, the construction has been executed and it will be completed soon. It confirms that the constructability is easy and fast without any difficulties, to use geotextile tubes with sand, replacing the rock and saving the costs. This project is about to fully finish, we recognize it is a classic case of geotextile tube application for marine engineering.
